Art Forms And Works Are A Great Field Trip For Your Class
As the years pass, the importance of having an educational field trip has been dismissed and trips consisted of going to the amusement parks, malls and local TV stations. That can be called a field trip but not the educational field trips that we as parents would like for our children to attend.
Good thing, the education system saw this flaw and tries to recuperate from their past mistakes. Field trips now include visiting museums, city halls, the White House, cultural centers, art galleries, monumental parks, National Zoo and water wonders of the Earth. Stanford University Study shows that children exposed to these types of arts education are more intelligent than those who are not exposed to arts. The child is more likely to love reading and writing which improves his or her vocabulary and comprehension. He or she is four times more likely to have higher grades and be engaged in student concerns and affairs in school. These kids lean forward on being better people by giving their services for free to do volunteer work. In California, all high school students have been directed to finish a year’s worth of education in arts to have a chance in getting in Ivy League Universities and other colleges, as well.
Preparing for a field trip is crucial. There are thousands of historical landmarks to visit. As a teacher or school principal, you have to make sure that the visit is indeed educational and sensible for the students. In addition, you must have their parents review and sign forms that allow their children to participate in the field trip.
Visit the museum or the location of the trip and talk to the staff about the history of the place, the content and what is so special about it. You have to look for yourself and see what the place can offer your students. Make questionnaires for the students to answer. After the preparation of the place, ensuring risk management guidelines, you are set to have the trip.
Teenagers are over emotional at times. The excitement of a field trip releases extra adrenaline which causes them to be worked up. Like any minor person, you need to set rules on how they must behave. Museums impose the following rules:
- No touching of display, paintings and other art works.
- No using the camera or video to photograph the insides of the museum.
- Cell phones are also prohibited inside the museum.
The students need to roam around the museum to appreciate the art forms and works. They have to form a personal opinion or view on the art works that they are viewing for each person has a distinct perspective on what they are looking at. In the same manner, they must be able to reflect and admire the objects that they are seeing and put this imagination into good use.
After the trip, encourage your students to recreate their visit. They can do similar art forms, write an essay, report further on historic events etc… on what made an impact to them about the trip. This is the beginning of arts education which must be done on a regular basis. Students who become more knowledgeable about arts tend to be those who love their country and their heritage.
