OETA’S CATHY TATOM REPORTS, THE EDUCATORS HAVE BEEN LEARNING ABOUT HIGH PAYING ALTERNATIVE CAREERS FOR STUDENTS WHO MAY NOT BE COLLEGE MATERIAL. K THROUGH 12 TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS ARE WRAPPING UP AN INTENSE TWO DAY MANUFACTURING CAMP AT OSU OKMULGEE’S PRYOR CAMPUS. THE SCHOOL IS LOCATED INSIDE THE MID AMERICA INDUSTRIAL PARK WHERE ASSOCIATES DEGREES AND CERTIFICATION COURSES ARE GIVEN TO EQIP STUDENTS WITH THE SKILLS NEEDED FOR MANUFACTURING JOBS IN THE PARK. Scott Fry/OSU Okmulgee: “The two day experience culminates with a round table discussion with industry leaders and legislators and it’s a great opportunity for those folks to have some real dialogue about the challenges each group faces.” MANUFACTURERS NEED SKILLED WORKERS. AND THEY NEED TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS TO STEET STUDENTS TO MANUFACTURING JOBS INSTEAD OF JUST COLLEGE DEGREES. Scott Fry/OSU Okmulgee: “You know a lot of our educators and I think the general public don’t have a good perception about what manufacturing is or the type of careers that can be had in manufacturing.” SCOTT FRY IS OSU OKMULGEE’S MID AMERICA INDUSTRIAL PARK SITE DIRECTOR OF ECONOMIC AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. HE SAYS THE EDUCATORS ARE LEARNING MANUFACTURING JOBS RANK NUMBER TWO IN THE NATION WHEN IT COMES TO WAGES AND BENEFITS. AND, MANY DON’T REQUIRE A COLLEGE DEGREE. BUT DO REQUIRE COMPUTER AND MATH SKILLS. Ted Mayes/High School Math Teacher: “He had just gone over how the sine is used to modulate AC motors and I teach that in my trig classes and I’m really looking forward to using this as a resource during the year to bring my kinds in when they say, “when are we going to use this? Hey, right here, right around the corner from where you live.” MANY MANUFACTURERS USE CONVEYOR BELTS WITH OPTICAL SENSORS TO KICK OUT PRODUCTS THAT DON’T MEET SPECIFICATIONS. nat sound of routing arm blasting out TO HELP THE EDUCATORS UNDERSTAND HOW THE MACHINES WORK.. AND WHAT IT TAKES TO RUN ONE… THEY SPENT MUCH OF THE DAY BUILDING THEIR OWN OUT OF MOTORIZED LEGOS. “We’re goin’ nuts here.” “Building the machine is just half the project, now they’re going to have to go to the computers to learn how to program it to kick out the white brick.” IN JUST TWO YEARS, TWO HUNDRED EDUCATORS HAVE ATTENDED THE CAMPS AT THREE SITES THROUGHOUT THE STATE THANKS TO FUNDING FROM GRANTS. Scott Fry/OSU Okmulgee: “The Oklahoma Dept. of Commerce actually got a grant from the Department of Labor all about promoting and advocating manufacturing as a career choice.” A CHOICE THAT CAN BE MADE WITH OR WITHOUT A COLLEGE DEGREE. IN PRYOR, I’M CATHY TATOM, THE OKLAHOMA NEWS REPORT.
