Purpose of Education – Closing Achievement Gap

To narrow the academic achievement gap in San Francisco public schools between people of color and the well heeled and well taken cared for – Marcus Bookstore and volunteer organization Public Allies joined forces on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to go out into San Francisco’s “at risk” neighborhoods to reach out and assist parents in supporting their K through 12 children to improve their academic performances while bringing them up to grade level. The mission was a success in finding strong interest from parents that had hoped someone would come along to provide the help needed to ensure their kids were not forgotten in the very competitive education market place. “Kids are eager to learn and it is criminal not to give them every chance to excel” is the way one parent put it. “The kids just need someone in the school system to care as much about the kids without connections and lots of money as they care about the kids who do have it all.” Very well put.
